Atonement, published in 2001, by British author Ian McEwan inspired an Academy Award nominated film, starring Keira Knightly and James McAvoy, and was named to TIME Magazine’s ALL-TIME 100 Greatest Novels list.
McEwan’s masterpiece centers around the life of inspiring writer Briony Tallis, who is just thirteen at the start of the novel, living in the chaos of England as it fights in World War II. When Briony witnesses a sexual encounter between her older sister, Cecila and Robbie Turner, family friend and son of the Tallis’ family housekeeper, she sets in a motion a series of events that will change Robbie and Cecila’s lives forever.
As Briony comes to understand how her actions were to blame for keeping her sister and the man she loves apart, she spends the rest of her life searching for atonement.
So, is Ian McEwan’s Atonement, considered to be his best work, a classic? Let us know!
